Political developments since the ANC’s electoral conference have unfolded at a bewildering pace, and in sometimes surprisingly positive directions. It is easy to forget that Cyril Ramaphosa won by the narrowest of margins, amidst a strange cast of characters, in a context of chronic institutional corruption. As always in South Africa there are reasons to be positive and negative, with the latter undoubtedly in the ascendancy for the foreseeable future. But how durable is this pendulum swing? What political economy patterns can we discern by looking beyond immediate events, over the horizon? And what are the implications for the South African economy, and business, for the foreseeable future?
